Clean, Secure, Affordable Energy?

January 28, 2010 | Washington, DC

Thesis

Can we produce energy cleanly, and overcome the ecological, carbon and climate concerns we confront? Can we produce it securely, and safeguard our supply and infrastructure – protecting against foreign influence, preventing terrorist attack, and fortifying our fragile grid against disaster events? Can we produce energy affordably, advancing prosperity and the prospects for economic progress in the developing world?

Amid these uncertainties, governments remain gridlocked, cleaving to outdated policies and perceptions. And the big industries which can provide leadership to resolve these questions -- oil, electricity, and automotive - seem content to plod along in 20th century mode. The realities of our circumstances suggest a need for urgent action and new habits. How can we overcome the inertia of inaction and business as usual?
